A first birthday session should feel like the start of a storybook—and that’s exactly how this one began. The early days of summer in Georgia soften everything they touch, from the blue hydrangeas to the golden light across the pasture.

A Home Built with Heart

Tillie Louise turned one in May. Her parents, Ashley and Nate, built their home on family land in Dallas, Georgia. It’s a place rooted in generations of love and memory. Right outside their front door, two creamy white Tennessee Walker horses graze in the pasture. They have striking blue eyes and used to be trail horses before baby Tillie came along. Now, they stay close—gentle companions on the edge of her world.

The Joy of Shooting at Home

There’s something special about photographing a first birthday session at home. It feels natural, grounded, and meaningful. Tillie’s session unfolded in the evening light. The setting couldn’t have been more perfect—oak trees stretched overhead, blue hydrangeas framed the porch, and lavender spilled alongside the white barn. The entire property wraps around a winding creek, giving the land a softness that’s hard to describe but easy to feel.

We didn’t rush. That’s the beauty of an at-home session. Tillie stayed close to her mama, clapped her hands, and looked curiously toward the horses. Whether she was in her daddy’s arms or sitting in her great-grandmother’s latter back chairs, every moment felt like a quiet celebration.

A Gentle Celebration of One

Turning one is a milestone, but it doesn’t need balloons or banners to be meaningful. Sometimes, it’s as simple as the way sunlight touches a child’s face or how a family moves together with ease. These are the kinds of sessions I love—where the land itself feels like part of the story.

Tillie wore the softest romper, a perfect match for the tones of the landscape. If you don’t have the wardrobe figured out yet, I do offer a curated client closet for moms and babies. The soft, timeless pieces we select are made to photograph beautifully in natural settings like this one. And while Tillie’s sweet dress wasn’t from my collection, I’ve linked a few similar styles below—from brands that specialize in this kind of softness and charm.

For Families with Land of Their Own

If you have property—whether it’s a pasture, barn, wooded trail, or flower-filled yard—don’t overlook it as your perfect backdrop. You don’t need to travel far or book a trendy location. Sometimes, the most authentic place is the one you’re already building your life on.

Tillie Louise’s first birthday session was the sweetest way to welcome summer. There was beauty in every frame, but more importantly, there was meaning.

You are so loved, little one.
