There is a particular kind of beauty in photographing children before they have learned to perform for a camera.
They move quickly, change their minds, reach for their parents, inspect what is growing beside the trail, and begin twirling when no one has asked them to. The photographs become more meaningful when we leave room for those things to happen.
This family session was photographed at White Oak Park in Dallas, Georgia, during an October evening in 2025. We met close to sunset, when the light had softened and the park had settled into the warm, muted colors of fall.
The goal was never to keep these little girls perfectly still. It was to preserve something much better: the way they belonged to this exact season of childhood.
Family Photos Do Not Have to Feel Stiff
Many parents arrive at a session carrying the same quiet concern:
“My children are not going to cooperate.”
Usually, what they mean is that their children may not stand in one place, look directly at the camera, and smile on command for an extended period of time.
That is perfectly fine.
Children are not expected to behave like small adults during my family sessions. I will guide everyone into flattering light and gently shape the session as we go, but I am also watching for the unscripted pieces: a hand reaching for Mama, sisters running together, a quick burst of laughter, or the way a child settles against a parent when she needs a moment.
We still create a few photographs in which everyone is together and visible. Those traditional images matter. But they do not have to be the whole story.
The strongest family galleries usually contain both: the portrait that belongs on the wall and the smaller, less predictable moments that bring the season back to you years later.
Letting Little Girls Be Little
At this age, childhood changes almost while we are looking at it.
The way sisters play together now will not look quite the same next fall. Their faces will change. The little mannerisms that feel ordinary today may eventually become the very things a parent wishes she could see once more.
That is why I do not spend an entire session trying to correct every movement.
I would rather give children something to do. We may walk, explore, cuddle, race toward a parent, or spin through the last light of the evening. Direction creates enough structure to keep the session beautiful, while freedom keeps it honest.
For these sisters, the movement became part of the visual story. Their photographs feel whimsical not because we built an elaborate set, but because they were given enough room to remain themselves.

Wardrobe is one of the most common sources of stress before family photographs. Parents often know the feeling they want but are less certain about how to translate it into clothing for several people.

Parents also do not need to spend the session repeatedly asking children to smile or look at the camera. Constant correction can make everyone more tense. I will direct the session, watch the light, and let you know when I need your help.

Make sure children have eaten, and bring a simple, non-messy snack when needed. Avoid introducing uncomfortable new shoes or clothing that a child has never worn before.
Most importantly, release the expectation that every child must behave perfectly.
A successful session does not depend on perfect behavior. It depends on connection, thoughtful direction, good light, and enough patience to notice what is already beautiful.
